El Niño is a natural climate pattern linked to warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in parts of the Pacific Ocean. It appears every few years and can influence weather around the world. Some regions become wetter. Others become hotter and drier. Global temperatures often rise during strong El Niño years.

In 2026, we’re looking at dealing with El Niño against a backdrop of higher global temperatures, warmer oceans and more stressed infrastructure. That makes the next major event more than a meteorological concern. It becomes another test of how prepared we are for climate pressure that keeps arriving faster than many systems were designed to handle.

A natural pattern in an unnatural context

There’s a risk of using “super El Niño” as a dramatic label without enough care. It’s not a formal scientific category, and climate language matters. Overstating certainty can do real damage, especially when public trust in climate communication is already fragile.

A strong El Niño can reshape global weather patterns. It can contribute to higher average temperatures, shift rainfall, affect food production and put pressure on water supplies. In some places, it can increase the likelihood of flooding. In others, it can deepen drought. Those impacts now land in a hotter world.

Cleaner digital experiences tend to be faster, easier to use and simpler to maintain. They often support accessibility, SEO, conversion and brand trust too. A lighter website is usually a better website.

What better digital choices look like

Digital sustainability starts with asking practical questions:

  • Does this page need to exist?
  • Is this image larger than it needs to be?
  • Does the video help the user, or does it only decorate the page?
  • Are these third-party scripts still useful?
  • Can people find the answer in one click instead of five?
  • Are we publishing content because it adds value, or because we’ve fallen into the habit of producing more?
  • Is the digital estate being maintained with the same care as any other business asset?

These questions sound simple. That’s the point. Much of the waste in digital systems comes from neglect, not malice.

None of this needs to sit outside commercial priorities. Faster pages can reduce bounce rates. Clearer journeys can improve conversion. Better content can help search performance. More accessible experiences can reach more people. Leaner platforms can be easier to manage.

Sustainability gives teams another reason to fix things that often needed fixing anyway.

The choices we can control

A better website won’t stop a flood. A smaller image won’t prevent a drought. A more thoughtful AI workflow won’t decide what happens in the Pacific Ocean. Still, the conclusion shouldn’t be helplessness.

Climate action is made up of many decisions across energy, transport, food, buildings, finance, policy, technology and behaviour. Digital sustainability is one part of that wider picture. For many organisations, it’s also a part they can start improving now.

The next super El Niño won’t just be a weather story because extreme weather now touches almost every part of how we live and work. It affects supply chains, infrastructure, insurance, food, health, energy and business resilience. It should also make us look again at the systems we build and use every day.

The digital world runs on real energy, real materials and real infrastructure. As climate risk becomes harder to ignore, digital waste becomes harder to justify. We can’t control El Niño. We can control whether the digital products, platforms and processes we create are heavier than they need to be.
